Last summer I had a really scary personal experience with my health, while I was on holidays with my wife. We both had some time off in July so we decided to find a peaceful island, not so popular and crowded as most of them, without much fuzz, without too many tourists and not enough night life. We didn’t need to look much.

on holidays

We found Samothraki , which is a natural paradise, with a lot of vegetation and really great beaches, with clean water, that also has all the requirements that I just mentioned above. We had never been there, but we had a friendly couple that was from there and always told us how wonderful Samothraki is. They could not accommodate us but they would be there during July, so we could have some time together and show us around.

We booked our holidays and planned everything beforehand. We first drove from Samothraki to Thessaloniki to visit some other old friends and spend a nice weekend there. And it turned out that I really like Thessaloniki, so I’ve written some more on the topic, (see posts at the bottom).

Then on Monday morning we took our car again and drove to Alexandroupoli for a couple of hours, that is about 300 km away from Thessaloniki. Actually there’s no direct connection from the seaport. So we got on the >boat at port of Alexandroupoli and got to the wonderful island of Samothraki .

Everything was just great for a couple of days, were where having a wonderful time in Samothraki. Just one or two days later, though, I started feeling a sharp pain in my lower right abdomen, on the right side, that was getting sharper as time passed. At first I thought that it was probably my stomach and something spicy that I may had consumed, since I love spicy food. Then a few hours later I thought that it could be maybe food poisoning, but all my friends said it could be appendicitis .

food poisoning, appendicitis

It was really late and the local medical center of the island (there’s no hospital on the island) was closed.

At that time, I didn’t think that it was such a big deal, and that the pain would just disappear after a while. Therefore, I didn’t really feel like looking for the doctor during midnight. After all, at the medical center there’s only one available doctor, who was technically a doctor for types of breast cancer , and who of course can be contacted on an emergency but is not available for 24 hours in his office. Or you can just hope to find a doctor having his holidays and maybe staying on the same hotel.

(Your top 50 sounds like a good post, by the way!)

I thought I’d be *everywhere* once we moved to Italy. But the reality (aside from having a baby and two dogs) is that I’m overwhelmed just exploring this country. There’s SO MUCH TO SEE and never enough time.

Congrats! I made it to all 7 continents before my 30th birthday, which wasn’t even a goal until I started planning a trip to Antarctica, Chile, Argentina with a friend years ago. After that I realized I only had Asia Australia left a little over a year, so I did it. Now my goal is every country in Europe before I turn 45, which gives me 7 more years to get to 21 countries, 3 of them are already booked for this summer. I’m with you on not wanting to go to every country in the world though. Last year I traveled at least a couple days each month except November December it was too much. I got so burnt out! So yeah, no desire to get to every country.

Wow, congrats Kate! I agree that too many people just want to be able to say they’ve visited so many countries, but end up seeing very little of any of them. As for future travel goals, what about every state in the US? Are there any you haven’t been to yet that you’d love to go too?

June 20, 2018 at 8:03 AM

Wow! I definitely admire your travels an I wish I had visited so many places in Europe, Kate! Walking Camino de Santiago sounds like so much fun! I loved your list and I hope I’ll get to visit at least half of these places!

Really loved this post, not many travel bloggers admit to not having the desire to travel to every single country in the world. I can also understand that feeling of relief now that you’ve been to all the countries in Europe and having the “freedom” to go back to repeat places. There’s so many countries I’d love to re-visit, but the tug to go somewhere new is a lot louder at times.

What an amazing achievement! I wish I could do the same but I think I’m even a slower traveler and would be happy to even visit all continents, Idk maybe one country in each lol

Interestingly, the definitions further identify the role of municipalities in forging urban resilience. Often understood as the first governmental agency to respond or prepare for natural disaster recovery/mitigation, the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) have suggested that international efforts to implement urban resilience may not necessarily materialise and improve disaster risk reduction at the local level – often, this can manifest in tension between local and national policies. Moving Urban Resilience Forward

ISO 37120, this is the International Organisation for Standardisation document titled Sustainable Development of Communities – Indicators for City Services and Quality of Life. This represents the ISO’s first attempt at international standardisation of urban resilience indicators, attempting to unify a common understanding across multi-scalar institutions. ISO 37121, Sustainable Development in Communities – Inventory of Existing guidelines and Approaches on Sustainable Development and Resilience in Cities , was adopted in 2017 and represents a paradigm shift in the implementation of urban resilience. [36] This 3-year progression reflects the new phases of understanding urban resilience, moving towards operationalisation. As a result, leading organisations have adopted increasingly sophisticated and integrated definitions which unify cross-disciplinary actors, promote quantifiable indicators and recognise the holistic qualities of the networked urban system. Approaches to achieving urban resilience have, therefore, been integrative (often encompassing several disciplines) strategic policies informed by strong governance with the purpose of navigating urban development.

This contemporary operationalisation of urban resilience has materialised, for example, in Singapore, where researchers and practitioners have responded to both the AVA (Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore) and the Singaporean Institute of Architect’s (SIA) call to increase Singapore’s future food security via architectural/urban design solutions. The result of this has been hypothetical developments which integrate communal food systems into apartment living, thereby alleviating Singapore’s fragile food security issues. This outcome is emblematic of contemporary efforts to achieve increased urban resilience by cross-disciplinary collaboration – uniting permaculture experts, NGO’s, urban planners/designers, architects and community members. Please do not ask for strumming patterns. Sharing online how to literally play a song (i.e. strumming, rhythm and tempo) is not allowed by the MPA (Music Publishers Association) because of copyright issues. Carefully listen to the song and try to really "feel" the rhythm. Once you get the basics of strumming, I can assure you it'll go real quick. Maybe the strumming guide can help you on your way.
